Details Of The Text: dh. one of the smṛti texts most frequently quoted by smṛti texts such as Gautama and later nibandha texts. As the text cites Manu quite often and the text amplifies the principles laid down in Manusmṛti, it is held by Bühler that the Bṛhaspatismṛti is a vārttika on Manusmṛti; it has prob. attained its final form before 4th Cent.; originally it seems to have existed in prose and verse form dealing with the topics of both Arthaśāstra and Dharmaśāstra. See Intro. pp. 1 ̶ 185 of GOS. edn. noted below. Cf. also Bārhaspatyārthaśāstra, NCC. XIII. p. 263a. For an observation of the GOS. edn. noted below see Louis Renou, Ind. Iranian Journal VI (1962) pp. 81 ̶ 102. See also Kane, HDS. I. i. pp. 484 ̶ 95. Ptd. (1) a collection of 84 verses ascribed to Bṛhaspati in treatises of Aparārka and others with German translation by Fuhrer, Leipzig, 1879. (2) about 711, verses on law with English translation by Julius Jolly, Minor Law Books SBE. 33, pp. 369 ̶ 96. 1889. (3) reconstructed on the basis of quotations in works on dh. with an elaborate intro. and verse index by K. V. Rangaswami Aiyangar, GOS. 85. 1941.
